Crazy Japanese Flesh Freaks Illustration
November 10, 2008, 1:47 pm
Filed under: Flesh Freaks, Movies | Tags: ,

This is from a Japanese horror review website where the writer appears to draw illustrations for every movie he reviews.  Here for comparison are his hilarious and detailed pictures for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Evil Dead, and Canadian cheapie Enter Zombie King.

I have no idea what any of the text means, but I imagine it’s mocking jokes of some kind.  I think the illustration of the zombie on the lower right is actually a little better looking than the zombie in the film.

But my favourite bit is that flying eyeball up at the top next to the zombie who looks like a witchy version of Oscar the Grouch.

Torturers take Manhattan

Legend of the Seven Bloody Torturers is set to play at the opening night gala of the New York Horror Film Festival on Wednesday, November 12th at 8pm at Don Hill’s Night Club.

Going strong since 2002, NYCHFF has become one of the largest and most recognized genre film festivals in the United States.  This year’s 50+ films include Daniel (The Blair Witch Project) Myrick’s The Objective, the CGI feature Resident Evil: Degeneration, Sundance favourite Timecrimes, and Bad Biology, Frank Henenlotter’s first movie since Basket Case 3 way back in 1992!

There’s more info on the Torturers screening right here, and a handy map to the night club courtesy the NYCHFF website.

Amberg Horror Festival starts this week

The Amberg Horror Film Festival starts this Tuesday, just in time for Halloween (though I don’t suppose they celebrate Halloween in Germany), with a really extensive schedule featuring over 40 features, a whack of shorts, and several horror-themed bands.

Trailers for the features, which include Canadian indie Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and the universally acclaimed Let the Right One In (currently sitting pretty at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes), can be found right here.

Legend of the Seven Bloody Torturers is showing at 3pm on November 1st with three other movies: Initiation, Getting Out, and Boris Sajtinac’s 50-minute animated film The Killer of Montmartre (Le Tueur de Montmartre). Here are some details about the film, courtesy a festival website:

Tired of his domineering mother, Francois, an artist, decides to kill her. His killing spree doesn’t end there and soon the authorities are looking for a serial killer. One day he notices a mysterious entrance that leads him into an arctic wasteland, ruled by Death. Death regales the artist with tales life and love: his adventures with the navy, the great love of his life, the submarine captain and the child they had together. The artist thinks he can outwit both the law and Death but he will soon meet his master.

Full of droll humour The Killer Of Montmartre is imbued with the anarchic spirit of Terry Gilliam’s Monty Python animations and the macabre touch of comic book creator Richard Sala. Sajtinac’s vividly rendered expressionistic backgrounds prove a match for his ability to mix surreal whimsy with irreverent wit.

. . . Find out all about this and other movies at the festival website, www.amberghorrorfest.com.

Unit 102 Theatre Goes Collective

Toronto’s much-loved micro-venue The Unit 102 Theatre in Parkdale has been hosting independent comedy, music, and art events for, I believe, just over two years.  Performers have ranged from the toast of Toronto’s music and comedy scenes to degenerate weirdos and the scum of the earth, lending the place a unique local flavour as both an offbeat venue and a freaky artsy fartsy clubhouse.  Up till now it’s served double duty as a theatre and residence, but that’s all changing now as managers Luis Fernandes and Liz White are moving out and the place is undergoing a major overhaul and paint job designed to take full advantage of the huge 1800 sq ft space.

Previously run entirely by Fernandes and White, the theatre is now turning over to a collective. They are still looking for members, and I highly recommend that anyone in need of a venue for performances, art shows, auditions, rehearsals, or whatever strange things you get up to, drop Luis a line and give the all-new 102 a look.

Here’s a message from Luis:

Liz and I are moving out, allowing for the space to become a full-time theatre arts studio. With us out of there, the space will double in size as half of the space will no longer be used as our living environment.

In an effort to streamline the theatre, we’ve knocked out a number of walls, so the space know seems REALLY FRICKIN’ HUGE! The space was always 1800 square feet, but only now with all the rooms taken out does it really feel like it. We are now starting to paint the place so it looks as spiffy as it feels.

With Liz and myself out, a theatre collective is forming to take on the running of the space. We are looking for 8 members to split the rent and time share studio hours. So far, six members have joined up with another two spaces still available.

That is why I send this message: If you are an artist in need of a studio space, we are currently interviewing for the remaining two spots. Essentially, the monthly cost would be $225, which would give you 52.5 studio hours (that’s $4.28/hour) and includes wireless internet and studio phone line. If you are interested, I have written up a package that explains the price breakdown and would be happy to send it out to any interested party. Just message me back!

So keep you eyes peeled after November 1st as we launch our first season as a collective. I’m sure there will be a lot of exciting work happening once our resident artists get to work! And thanks to all those people who supported this place while it was still in transition…it is because of your kindness and support we’ve gotten this far at all!

It’s a great, intimate venue and a fantastic opportunity for comedians, theatre troupes, and artists of all stripes.  For more info please visit the Facebook Group or give Luis a shout at luisfernandes397[at]hotmail[dot]com.

Freak Show Horror Film Festival October 17 - 19

The third annual Freak Show Horror Film Festival runs this weekend, October 17-19, with a blood-soaked barrage of brain-busting horror films that’ll turn one red state a whole lot redder.  Orlando, Florida will play horrid host to shorts and features all weekend long as part of the Spooky Empire horror convention, and to top it all off genre master George A. Romero, he of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Martin, Creepshow, and Knightriders fame - will be receiving a lifetime achievement award on Sunday.

The trailer below, though geared mainly toward submitting filmmakers, should give you a good idea of what’s in store:

Legend of the Seven Bloody Torturers is the kickoff movie on Friday night as the opener for the festival award winner Nobody, with additional features and shorts all day Saturday and Sunday.  Check out the website for detailed listings, pictures, and gruesome swag.

Blissfully Torturing Lovecraft

A schedule announcement from the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival: Torturers is going to be showing as part of Shorts Block 3, playing on Sat Oct 4 at 7:30pm in the Main Theatre and Sun Oct 5 at 10pm in the Left Theatre.

The festival, showcasing works about Lovecraft, literary horror, and weird tales, runs from October 3-5 at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland, Oregon.  This year it will include an appearance by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and feature a Lovecraft-themed wedding.  Amazingly enough, this is not actually the first wedding to take place at the festival, but the fifth!  More chilling even than the Lovecraftian theme is that the vows are to be written by special guest author Robert M. Price - incidentally the father of the bride!  That should scare every groom in the room, Lovecraft afficionado or otherwise.
